Brazil’s 3 Antioxidants Fight Dull and Tired Skin

Vitamin C and Vitamin E

Astaxanthin
Astaxanthin is sometimes called the “King of the Carotenoids” due to its effectiveness as an antioxidant. This nutrient is found in some types of red algae and marine life, such as salmon and crabs. While it appears in skin care products, it may be best used as a supplement, as research shows it can address several skin conditions from the inside out.
One study found that astaxanthin improved skin wrinkles, age spot size, and skin texture. In a double-blind clinical trial, subjects reported significant improvement in moisture levels, especially around the eyes, along with better elasticity and overall tone. Another double-blind study found that it can help the skin’s ability to retain water, thereby improving moisture and radiance.
Blood Orange Extract
Blood orange extract is a lesser-known superfood, but new research highlights its potential to improve the complexion. A randomized, double-blind, controlled study found that participants who took 100 mg daily saw a statistically significant increase in skin radiance. The increase was 9.2% after 14 days and 18.5% after 56 days.
The same study also found that the extract helped with wrinkle depth. Researchers measured the participants’ mean deepest wrinkle before, during, and after supplementation. They found that wrinkle depth decreased by 6.9% by the end of the study.
Increasing antioxidant intake is a reliable way to address dullness. These free-radical fighters can improve skin from the inside out, allowing the complexion to glow. While it is good to get a variety of antioxidants through diet, these options are among the most effective. If dietary intake is insufficient, supplementation may be considered.
