Brazil Study Reveals Why You Dream of Specific Things

May 18, 2026 — Dreams remain one of life’s greatest puzzles. They can be frightening, pleasant, vivid, and often strange. New research published in the journal Communications Psychology suggests that what people dream about is often shaped by their personality and shared life experiences.

Study Examines Dream Content

Researchers collected data from nearly 300 adults over two weeks. Participants recorded their daily experiences and their dreams. The study also looked at sleep patterns, personality traits, and cognitive abilities. This resulted in more than 3,700 reports.

The team used advanced natural language processing, or NLP, to identify patterns and structure in the dreams. They found that individual traits and shared life experiences influence dream content.

For example, data gathered during the height of the pandemic showed that dreams were heavily influenced by world events. People reported emotionally intense dreams or dreams about limitations. As the pandemic continued, those dreams became less common. This suggests that as people adapt, their dreams also change.

Personality and Dreams

The study found that personality plays a role in dream content. Participants who were more prone to mind-wandering reported fragmented, bizarre, and rapidly changing dreams. Vivid and immersive dreams were more common among participants who believed dreams have meaning and significance.

The NLP data also showed that everyday life is transformed, almost warped, by dreams. Participants described their waking lives and their dreams. The language processing techniques revealed that dreams often reorganize or reinterpret waking events.

“Rather than constituting a direct replay of daily experiences, dreams may offer a hyper-associative reinterpretation of past events and future expectations,” the study authors wrote. “They weave together apparently distant elements into coherent, though often bizarre, scenarios.”

Implications for Understanding Dreams

The study authors noted that more research is needed to understand how personality influences dreams. Still, the findings bring science closer to understanding the mystery.

“Our findings show that dreams are not just a reflection of past experiences, but a dynamic process shaped by who we are and what we live through,” said lead study author Valentina Elce, Ph.D. “By combining large-scale data with computational methods, we were able to uncover patterns in dream content that were previously difficult to detect.”

Using NLP for dream research could be a new and effective way to learn more about dreams, consciousness, and memory.

“Dreaming serves as a mechanism through which the brain processes and integrates newly acquired memories,” the study authors wrote. “It gradually strips away or reduces their emotional intensity.”

The research suggests that dreams are not only shaped by lived experiences but also by shared experiences, emotions, and personalities. While the full meaning and mechanisms behind dreams may remain unknown, the study shows that dreams are a dynamic process tied to who people are and what they go through.
